ending

3/4/2020 in Stories

Susan is an avid fan of happy endings. Though her favorite midnight dj often tells stories of failed love stories, the deep sound of his voice is enough to make her stay up late at night. She stumbled upon his radio station seven months ago, when she was desperately finding her way to sleep, and she fell in love with his voice the moment she first heard him speak. His voice became Susan’s tranquilizer every night.

It is a pleasure for Susan whenever she hears him speak over the radio. She hasn’t heard a voice as manly as his ever since she entered college. Sometimes she records his voice on her phone so she can still listen to him even in the day. However she prefers midnight- when everyone is asleep, moon and several constellations form in the sky, her blanket is the only thing that covers her body, and the unique wind breeze she can only feel at night. Joe is his name. She doesn’t know if he has a second name nor a last name, but it is enough to let her create a picture of a man on his twenties who was a varsity of football when he was in highschool as he had mentioned once on his program. Susan hates the mistery Joe is creating to his listeners.

Not only Susan loves to hear Joe’s voice but also the stories he delivers on his program called Hey Joe. Some stories made her think that some heartbreaks don’t seem real but actually happen on someone else’s life. But tonight, Susan cries the hardest when Joe tells a story of winning. She lies on her bed straight without any bend. She doesn’t wipe the tears that fall from both ends of her eyes down to her sheets. Her heart breaks this time.

“I keep on telling failed relationships, but I’ll tell you I just won in love.” Joe says in mild excitement. Susan closes her eyes. She has been listening to his announcement he said he was going to have a week ago. She waited for this in enthusiasm but she kind of wish tonight is not real.

“I’m getting married on Saturday.” Joe continues.

“And that’s it. I hope I’ll be a good husband to Marylyn. It’s been a wonderful time telling you stories to sleep, but someone else is going to do it for you now. So for the last time, it’s Joe you’re listening to.”

He makes silent laughs. Susan breathes out pain.

“I’m glad I have my happy ending.”

“Joseph Landers. Goodnight.”
